Patient Confidentiality
Adolescence is an important transition from childhood to adulthood. During these years, patients will be offered and encouraged to have a portion of the visit alone with their clinician. After age 14 patients need to give their written permission for us to share their medical information with their parents or guardians.
We try to pay special attention to the personal needs, confidentiality and privacy of our adolescent patients. During these visits, we will discuss issues such as alcohol, smoking, substance use and sexual activity.
Prenatal Services
- Meet and greet with one of our clinicians
- Vaccination for parents and caregivers (including maternal RSV vaccine)
- Car seat installation inspection
- Drug allergy delabeling for expectant mothers

Penicillin Allergy Testing & Delabeling
Most penicillin allergies aren’t real. We can help your family find out–safely. If your child has a penicillin or amoxicillin allergy noted in their chart, there’s a very good chance it isn’t accurate. Roughly 9 out of 10 people who carry a penicillin allergy label are not truly allergic. At Fairhope Pediatrics, we offer a simple, supervised way to check — and, when appropriate, to clear the label for good.
Why so many labels are wrong
Most penicillin allergy labels are placed in early childhood, usually after a rash appeared while a child was taking amoxicillin for an infection. We now know these rashes are almost always caused by the underlying virus or illness — not the antibiotic. The label sticks anyway and can follow your child into adulthood.
Why it’s worth checking
An inaccurate penicillin allergy isn’t harmless. It means relying on second-choice antibiotics that can be less effective and cause more side effects, and it contributes to antibiotic resistance. A correct allergy record protects your child’s care now and for the rest of their life.
What “delabeling” looks like
After we review your child’s history, eligible children complete a supervised oral challenge in our office: a small first dose, then the rest, with monitoring over about 90 minutes. If there’s no reaction, we remove the allergy from the chart that day and send you home with simple instructions. Our team is prepared for the rare reaction at every step.
Is my child a candidate?
Many children qualify — especially those whose reaction was a mild rash, with no trouble breathing, swelling, or other severe symptoms. Children with a history of a severe reaction are referred to an allergist instead. The best next step is to talk with us about your child’s specific history.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe?
Yes. Serious reactions during these supervised challenges are very rare, and our team monitors closely and is ready to treat one immediately.
Will it hurt?
No needles for the challenge itself — it’s a dose of liquid or tablet by mouth, followed by observation.
What if a rash shows up later?
A small number of children get a mild, harmless rash days later — usually from an illness, not the medicine. Take a photo and call us; we’re happy to help.
Parents, too
Penicillin allergy labels are just as common — and just as often inaccurate — in adults. If you carry one yourself, ask us; we can evaluate caregivers as well. Clearing an inaccurate label protects your access to first-line antibiotics, including during pregnancy and for other common infections.
